The server should show the opponent leave. If you look at the dates special leave shows in red, I think it is.

The server doesn't give a player the option to email his opponents and you have to wait until he moves to see if he wants to tell you.

I don't think the tournament director is under any obligation to give anything but a general indication of the reason for the special leave. He can simply call it medical leave, chess leave (to play in an OTB event) or compassionate leave which can cover a lot. Most of the special leaves I've seen are of the type where it could be worse. It could be me who needs it and that would be much worse, if you get the drift.
