Hi Per,
Your ideas sound excellent to me! Gino suggests that a time limit of 45/10 would also achieve the desired result (2-year tournament cycle). I understand some of the stronger events (WC, Candidates, Oly finals) should cater to the requirements of the strongest players, so they should use a slower time limit. But the CL, as a "special event" designed for players of every strength, needs a more general design. The emphasis isn't so much on playing the strongest possible chess but on the fun of competition. Team logos, team web sites, team spirit, even "trash talking", these are all an important part of the CL tradition now.
I say let us make the CL the most fun team event possible. Speeding up the event a bit with a faster time limit will contribute to the fun, I think, even if the quality of the games in the "A" group suffers. People grow impatient with delays, so a faster time limit is an obvious approach. Hopefully we can add new features to make the event more spectacular and interesting. Perhaps it's time to start another thread with ideas for improving the Champions League.
