Hi Everybody,
1) Please receive my best wishes for the upcoming 2007 New Year.
2) I want to share with you some experiences with the dreaded DMD. First, I want to share with you that I have encountered a bizarre variation of the DMD (extreme case). The player has a virtually lost game, and he is well aware of it. He moves approximately only once and a month when he has plenty of time. When his time starts to run-out, he waits until he has only 1 day left. Then, he starts to move when he has only hours in his clock. For instance, sometimes he moves when he only has 20 or 10 minutes on the clock. He does this until he reaches the new time control. After he gets the new 50 days, he repeats the process.
It used to bother me that people employed such tactics. However, after talking to another player during the year. I found an antidote. I registered for many tournaments. I have many games on the go. Because I have so many games, it really does not bother me at all if somebody starts to delay the games. If anything, I find it a blessing if somebody starts to employ it.
I also assume that the games will not be over in less than a year. I expect some of them to take 2 years or more.
As a result, the pace of my games have slowed down considerably, but I try to explain to my opponents that my replies will take time. Anyway, I hope that this helps some of you to avoid frustration with the people that use the DMD.

On another note, I have become a soccer referee. I noticed that in the leagues where I conduct games, the length of the games varies depending on the skill of the teams.
Perhaps, ICCF can do the same for its tournaments. For example:
Open & High = 10 moves in 40 days.
Master and other classic tournaments (i.e. world cup, etc) = 10 moves in 50 days.
World Championship cycles and other highly competitive tournaments = 10 moves in 60 or 70 days.
The above was only example. The idea is that ICCF adjust the time control depending on the level of skill and commitment from the players.
I also think that the Open and High class section can have more players now in the server i.e. 11 players. |
