Question: Approximately how many moves have been made in each game?
Answer: Over 40 in one and over 60 in the other (only two of the three games are critical to determine the championship). The third game is also over 60 moves.

Do you want to explain how this works and the reason it's necessary? I don't think people understand it's the U.S. mail service which was the main problem in the event.
Answer: As a TD I believe it is useful for me to help with the progress of events in any way I can. Postal events are particularly difficult, since there are no easy ways to confirm receipt of moves and dates of receipt/sent. Often, in my opinion, disputes occur when neither player can legitimately be faulted. In these particular games I send/receive the correspondence to/from Japan (the player does not have access to email) and handle the USA transmission of the moves via email. This way I can officially confirm much of the correspondence and eliminate many possible areas of dispute or delay. I can't be sure I have actually eliminated any problems but I can be satisfied that the games are running smoothly and in a timely fashion. Any time a move might be lost I am right in the middle of it, so both players (assuming they trust the TD) can feel confident of what is happening.
Question: "No, this is a zonal final and is not used for seeding players into another event."
It was my understanding the next zonal final can not be started until this one has ended. If that is correct then this event dragging out indefinately is not without consequences.
Answer: You may be right, but the Zonal Director would be aware of any potential problem with scheduling. I'm not aware of any active plans to start the next NAPZ Championship. I suggest that you contact the Zonal Director with any specific questions. I am confident that I would have been told if this event needed to be finished. I personally prefer having the event finished by the players, not by adjudications. Of course, adjudications serve a purpose, when they are needed.
Question: "I sure wish this event were being shown 'live'!"
I have an idea. Why not post the address for the News Page you keep on the event?
Answer: Readers are probably not aware that I maintain a "hidden" web page (marked so search engines cannot find it) for the participants in this event. I consider it a way of personally keeping the players informed, and the information is not intended for the public. Some examples of the type of information displayed: results reported, leave and special leave, etls awarded, penalities applied, news about the participants. Here is an example:

The games themselves are not displayed here and, being a postal event, it would be difficult to display the games "live". In addition, the ICCF rules specify a very difficult set of requirements before the games can be shown "live". I don't have any desire to get involved in this, but my remark was meant to convey how interesting the final games are and how entertaining it would be for people to be able to follow these last heroic attempts to win a zonal championship.
