I do think that the more modifications you need to bolt on to a time control system, the less likely it is to have been suitable in the first place. If you have to impose a maximum amount of accumulated time to an incremental time control *and* a maximum move time then you're probably using the wrong system.
I've been thinking about using the 10/50 system on SchemingMind, but without accumulated time being carried forward; effectively restarting the clock every ten moves - this should prevent unreasonable amounts of time accumulating whilst allowing reasonable reflection time.
There are a few variations on this - for example the fifty day time control could be rolling, i.e. apply to the last ten moves regardless of which move you were on (but maybe that would be to complicated)... or the time control could be varied depending on the stage of the game, say thirty days for the first ten moves and sixty for the second ten....
Just some thoughts
