Seeking Feis Reviews
There are good ones.... and not so good ones. We are hoping to expand our collection of feis reviews on Damhsoir.com to include a wide range of competition which provide adult-level categories. Post your feis reviews here... or email them to us and we'll add them to our list at http://damhsoir.home.att.net/feisguide.html If a feis has already been reviewed and you'd like to add your comments, please do! Thanks, in advance, for helping us out! |
Dancin' Mom

Rince Reno, held on Mother's Day in Reno, Nevada, and billed as a celebration of Irish dance moms, has become an instant family favorite. This new feis was launched last year without many of the glitches normally associated with such ventures. The hosting school has tapped into a network of seasoned volunteers and feis organizers, so the organization is superb. They even give out fresh red roses to the Irish dance moms; how cool is that? At the most recent feis, competitions ran either on time or ahead, making it easy for out-of-town travelers. The resort venue is family friendly, catering to all ages, and making it a great place to bring the family for a mini-vacation. The Tiny Tots Demo which gives the littlest dancers a place to shine, is not to be missed. The cherry on the sundae for me this year was the chance to do a 2-hand reel with my daughter in the Mother's Day Special. I didn't really care if we placed or not. The looks of pride on my husband and mother-in-law's faces were priceless! |

The 2007 Comhaltas Irish Dance Festival was held on Sunday, May 27, 2007 at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This is always a great feis because so many local schools take part in putting it together. Strong adult turnout today -- the smallest competition was beginners with 3 dancers and the largest were the novice competitions with 19-20 dancers. Two adult perpetual trophies at this feis -- the Nash Gerald Treble Reel trophy, which was won by Angela L. of the Beaton School, and the Peggy O'Neill 8-hand Cup which was won by the Culkin School's Cross Reel team (which is heading to the North American championships in July). Both of these trophies were presented on the main "champs" presentation stage which was a nice way to recognize the adults. The solo competitions were well attended and placements seemed to be spread out amongst all the dancers. Almost all adult competitions were completed by 4:00 PM. In Figures, teams represented Aoibhneas an Rince, Beaton. Crossroads, Culkin and Teelin (may have missed a team -- sorry!) in the 2 hands (Culkin won); AAR, Beaton, Crossroads and Culkin (2 teams) in the 3 Hands (Culkin won); 3 Culkin teams in the 4 hands (the reigning SRO champs won); and 2 Culkin teams in the 8 hands. In addition to the schools listed above, adult solo competitors showed up from Rhythm of Ireland, Maple, Dudney, Do Cairde, McGrath, and O'Neill James. |

Rachel J sent in the following Feis Review for the Old Dominion Feis.... "What a nice feis for adults! It was held in Jeb Stuart HS in Falls Church, VA and put on by the Maple School. All the adult solos were run back to back on the same stage, progressing thru all levels in one dance before moving onto the next dance. We were on the largest stage in the gym and the only wooden platform one. Most beginner dances had 4-5 dancers. Advanced beginner was the most represented with 10-12 dancers. Novice and prizewinner had 6-9. The stage manager was incredibly organized and had us off and on the stage in no time. Parent-child dances and adult figures were also on the same stage. All the adult figures and solos were done by about 11 am. Since we were all in the same location for a while, there was a lot of pleasant socializing and friend making going on. I spoke to dancers from Culkin, Crossroads, Rhythm of Ireland, Dudney, McGrath, O'Neil-James, Teelin, and others I am not sure of. Everyone was friendly and supportive of each other. Set dances and treble reels were held at the end of the day on a different stage, which was a type of rubber matting that was taped down to the floor. This stage was smallish, but the surface did not seem to cause any problems or dampen the sound much. Food was available, but the lines were fairly long. Bathrooms were in short supply (as usual at a feis!), and there was no indication that the girls locker room (off the gym where we were dancing) was available for changing and had a bathroom. The bleacher seating was adequate and it was nice to get up and away from the craziness down on the gym floor. At times it got a little crowded down there! The musicians were very good and the music was clearly heard from the stages. Two pairs of stages shared musicians which slowed them down in the afternoon, as they had to wait for "fast" and "slow" dances in novice. The adult solo stage had their very own accordian player, who did an excellent job. Results went up in a timely manner, but the results room was quite a distance from the "action" so it was difficult to check results until later. No one mentioned that the parent-child was going to be announced and given on the podium, so my daughter and I missed our first chance to get up there! It was also done right in the middle of the adult comps, so that could have been timed a little better. Overall, it was a great feis, and one I will probably do again next year!" |
