Re: MARRIAGES

Hi AnnMarie

Darnall area is next to Attercliffe. In the old days, 1930s 40s, 50s, and even before, Attercliffe and Darnall were thriving communities with rows and rows of terraced housing for workers. There were larger terraced houses too, where young families could rent single rooms where they cooked, slept and lived. From there people could walk to work in the steel and other companies nearby in the industrial areas to save busfare.

Re: MARRIAGES

Hi Annmarie
Garden Street is in the Town Centre Area of Sheffield. I believe once again it was full of little terrace houses in the 1800's Although it tends to be what time frame you are asking about. In the 1960's it was a factory area. I would have thought that the Chapel you refer to would have been Methodist......although I may be wrong and no doubt someone else will correct me. In 1800's and most likely earlier than that Sheffield was quite small and most people lived in what we now know as the Town Centre. I think at one time that Darnall was a village????????

Re: MARRIAGES

Dates for these marriages would be useful.

The Darnall Church is likely to be Holy Trinity (CofE). Another CofE church, St Alban's, was built in the area in 1910.

The history of the Garden Street chapels (at least three of them) is complicated, judging by the description in Stephen Johnson's book 'Garden Street, Sheffield: The every day story of a city street'. The chapel referred to will certainly be non-conformist and is probably the Independent (Congregationalist) Chapel, opened in 1803 and rebuilt in 1867.

Re: MARRIAGES

Hi Hugh,

thanks for the feedback about the probablity of the garden street chapel being non congregrationalist.
on the m. cert instead of banns,it says that the marriage was carried out according to the rites and ceremonies of the congregational demarcation (what?).

Also thanks to both janice and ann - the address for herbert hny sollitt's m cert (1913) is 13 or 15 rouald street darnall (where would that be?).

I thought that marriages took place within the brides parish - this one didn't as she came from battersea s.w. and her father, lewis broadbridge has his occupation down as traveller (does this mean he was a gypsy?)

The other m. cert (1844) alfred sollitt's address is regent terrace and caroline boyes is galbraith street -where would they be?

many thanks

Re: MARRIAGES

Hi Ann Marie,

Let me show you a Map of Sheffield that I always encourage folks to read and read often.

It under our LINKS page and then Maps......

1890 Map of Sheffield......

http://sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/LinksIndex.html

Click on the Map to make it larger.....

Between Weston Park and the Cathedral is the area you need to look at.

BUT...... My first choice would be the Alan Godfrey Maps that are available all over England and can be bought and mailed overseas very inexpensively. Alan Godfrey has a website.

You would need the Sheffield West Map.
Yorkshire Sheet 294.07
and at two pounds 10 pence cheap at the price. They are fantastic Maps.

Garden St Wesleyan Reform became Weston St Chapel in 1861 then became part of the United Methodist Free Church. Carver St Circuit.

Records;- Baptisms from 1861.
Marriages 1909.

Does this match the information Hugh gave????
If not I will dig some more...

Elaine in Ottawa.
