ANY Info on Jenny McAllen!
Hi All, Wondered whether anyone could help with my little problem! Trying to find out as much as possible about a 2x Great Grandmother. The only 'real' info i have is her death cert. Jenny McAllen otherwise Copnell died 1937 aged 51 years. Puts birth 1885-1888. States in occupation box of Sicey Avenue, Sheffield spinster of no occupation, daughter of McAllen, occupation unknown. She was an unmarried lady (Jenny McAllen) but had a number of children with Arthur Copnell but couldnt marry as Arthur was married to another lady. I am related to their daughter. They had 5 children between 1914-1923?. I have info on the children but the only other info i have on Jenny is anecdotal from a very unreliable source. The source states that she was born in Shipley but this could be false as she was very unhappy for me to research Jennys background?? The source did say that Jenny came to Sheffield and lodged with Arthur Copnell and this is how they met. Source also said that Jenny came to Sheffield with a daughter, also called Jenny. Daughter Jennys marriage cert 1930 gives her age as 20, birth year 1919-1921. Have been unable to find anything as regards to births for both Jennys. All children born to Jenny and Arthur are in the index twice-under Copnell and under McAllen. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks, Jonathan p.s. some certs say Jenny some say Jennie!! |

Hi Jonathan I think you'll be hard pressed to find anything on these people just yet. Jennie must have come into Sheffield from somewhere else, and not until after the 1901 census. I think I found Arthur and his wife Selina visiting a family with the surname Kennie in 1901.This Arthur was born c1877. The head of the family was a William Kennie. The next census might shed some light, it depends on when Jennie came to Sheffield. Sorry I can't be of more help, someone else might have a few suggestions so fingers crossed. Regards, Kim |

Hi again Jonathan I don't think her daughter could have married in 1930 aged 20 if she was born 1919-1921, did you mean 1940? If she was born C1920, then she would be the daughter of Jenny and Arthur if the others were born 1914-1923? Regards Jenny Mcallens name, it could be that she herself was illegitimate and was registered under her Mothers surname, whatever that was, later "adopting" her Fathers surname. All my illegitimate line born 1883 onwards carried their mothers surname at birth registration, but were Dawtrys by the time I found them in 1901. Kim |

This is my last one, honest. I have found a Jennie Mclellan registered in 1909 in Blackburn, Lancashire. I don't know if there is any connection. The name McAllen seems to be Scottish. If you look at the 1901 census returns for Scotland, there is a vast array of Jenny and Jeannie McAllens registered there. The name is also spelt McLellan and McKellan. I think when the census returns come out for 1911, you just might be able to find her on a census, and it should then tell you where she was born. Apparantly they may be released as early as next year. Kim |

Hi Kim, Thanks for the replies! Jennys daughter Jenny married in 1930 aged 20 as i have her marriage certificate. Jenny wasnt Arthurs daughter but must have been born elsewhere to another father! Its rather a strange family i must say! I think your right about the Scotland connection but i feel put off by the relative who thought she came from Shipley! I asked her specifically whether she had a scottish accent etc but she didnt really say yes or no! Thanks for your input Kim, Regards, Jonathan |

Hi Jonathan I wouldn't take account of what other people have, I've had people contact me who share the same ancestors, but their trees are completely different! Even if you try to show them the evidence you have, they sometimes don't want to know and carry on blindly. Trust your own instincts, you have more of a feel for your family than anyone else, do your own research and keep an open mind. The younger Jenny might have been registered under her real fathers name, again making it difficult for you. Or there could be a massive Scottish connection here with them all being registered in Scotland. At first I thought they might be Irish until tracing one branch back to Lancashire and finding a Patrick born in Scotland, that's what got me thinking. There were McAllens in Sheffield, perhaps they were related to the other branch and that's what brought Jenny to Sheffield. Let's hope she's on the next census with her Mcallen name as it will clear it up for you. Good Luck, Kim |

Hi again Jonathan I've traced the McAllens in Sheffield back to an Edward and Charlotte Mcallen. He was born in 1819 in Armagh Ireland, just to confuse things, and his wife was born in Lincolnshire. They are quite an interesting family, as Edward appears to have left Charlotte after 1861 and is found living in Northumberland in 1871. There is then an emigration record against the same name to New York. Poor Charlotte was left with a string of children in Sheffield and died in 1886 (or there abouts). Interestingly they had a child called Alice and a son called George, 2 of the names in your line, there may be others. Could one of these children be Jennys dad, and she was born outside the UK? Bit of a mysery as she doesn't appear to be registered in any county in the uk. Oh well bring on the 1811 census! Kim |
