Old Sheffield Schools 1800's
Hello everyone Shane here from Christchurch in the South Is of New Zealand.Battling various surgeries over the years I am also battling with the childhood of a Thomas Leslie Crooke born Sheffield Mar 04 1861. I am trying to piece this man's life together before he arrived here in NZ 1899 as Senior Medical Officer at the new developing Christchurch Hospital.Over the years I have gathered his bith until his death here in 1943 but his childhood eludes me and schooling.I am working from the Dr's autograph book I foung tossed out in the rubbish.Which contains autographs of some 800-900 family relatives friends and colleagues of some great Pioneers from the UK to all over the world to NZ.Some name are mentioned on UK History TV,Antiques Road Show UK as Special interest. I would acccept any e mails on ANY information made possible to this difficult subject of historical persons.I don't want this man's life to end in grave like so many pioneers of past. I thank all for any responess in hope of eventually producing a book(s)with acknowlegements.ShaneNZ. |

Hi Shane From the 1881 census it would seem that his father was an Army Chaplain based in Sheffield. He possibly wouldn't have attended any local schools but would have had either private tuition or be sent away to school. A properly qualified doctor would have had to train at a University - Sheffield didn't have a University back then. There were several in the country in the 1880's but the only ones I can bring to mind are Edinburgh and London. I can't spot him on the 1881 census but if his father was still with the army they would have moved around quite a bit - and abroad as well. I'll send the 1861 census image via email. Kind regards, Ann |

Ann thanks for fast reply Im on NZ time but awake almost 6am.Yes I have University and 1861 census of his birth.I have nothing on his childhood or schooling, names of possible schools from Sheffield about 1869 say.I have him recorded and baptised by his father Chaplain Milward Crooke at THE BARRACKS Hillsborough and that's it.Mostly all I haveis his life after 1899 in NZ here in Christchurch. The family and childhood are nagging me at the moment. I think I'm running out of steam and records or links. Thanks YOu greatly for reply too and any help..ShaneNZ |

If you look to the left in the margin, you'll see "Parish Records" where there is also a baptism of a sister Beatrice Nora Jane Crooke, presumably you already have this? Regards, Marlene |

Hi all Shane here NZ picking up afew pieces. We have Dr Thomas Leslie Crooke established in Scotland further to this he worked at the Royal Infirmary Scotland but where and for how long? He was also a Ship's surgeon on the P&O Liners and The New Zealand Shipping Line which I have found no records of any in NZ. Feel like a mission to find a ship he may have worked on or left the UK on to arrive in NZ before May 1899, Maybe just a name of a SHIP???Thanks Shane NZ |

Hi Elaine Thanks for new direction. Sadly many of the sights won't let me in simply because I'm not a paying member. I have found a T L Crooke sailed from London 1899 to Wellington NZ but can't access to confirm either name or the name of Ship etc. Im not clued up on this and found these searches extremely difficult. Thanks Shane NZ. |

Hi all.Recovery here this time is going to be aslow process afer last Op.Thanks all for still helping. Most recently a small book appeared called Victorian Voyage a Shipbooard Diary about Annie Beauchamp 1864-1918 nee Dyer and husband Harold Dyer a trip from Wellington NZ to Plymouth UK 1898 March to May.Annie is the mother to Katherine Mansfield a NZ writer. The Surgeon on borad is Dr Thomas Leslie Crooke (SS Ruahine). So I found including Annie's about 10 more autographs from his book including a Count and Countess. So a path is forming as to how the Dr obtained so many autographs. Although this is not School related,as I still have nothing on his Youth to go on.Just later on i Any suggestions again thanks Shane??? Ps Angie the 500 was only humour . |
