Ellis family from Ecclesfield

Please can anyone help, I have really hit a brick wall. My great great grandma was called Ellen Ellis (born 1832 in Ecclesfield); she married Thomas Thornton (I have the marriage cert)Ellen's father was called William Ellis. I have found a William and Edna Ellis on the IGI for the baptism of Ellen Ellis but they appear to disappear off the face of the earth after that! I have found them in the 1841 census - name spelled Elliss but after that I cannot find a thing. I don't even know where Edna Ellis came from - I certainly don't have her maiden name. Can anyone throw a light on the family at all?

Re: Ellis family from Ecclesfield

Hello Wendy

Do you have Ellen on the 1851 census? I found an Ellen Ellis born 1832 living in Kimberworth. She is a visitor and it says she was born in Ecclesfield. The household has a John Easclwood (think this might be Eastwood) who is 29 and his wife Sarah plus 3 children, and their in-laws Jonas Hanley and Sarah both about 60. I don't know what her connection to them could be.

I found a possible death for William in 1843 in Wortley. Could it be he died and Edna re-married, her new husband having links to this family.Or Maybe Sarah Hanley (aged 60) was an Aunt and Sarah (aged 28) a cousin. Could be Edna died too.

That's all I could find, sorry.

Hi Wendy,

there are a couple of burials at Ecclesfield St Mary

Ednah Ellis 28/9/1843 age 36
William Ellis 11/6/1843 age 39
both of Ecclesfield

Could this be them?

Re: Ellis family from Ecclesfield

Hi Heather.

I think you are spot on with those two.

There is also a burial for William ELLIS infant son of William 20th Feb 1834 at St Marys Ecclesfield.

The 1851 census shows Henry ELLIS aged 12 and John ELLIS aged 7 both orphans living with a Sarah FROST in the Wicker.HO107/2342 folio 33. This could be the Henry who is shown as aged 1 in the 1841 census.

Re: Ellis family from Ecclesfield

Hi Angela
Your theory is interesting but if the John you are referring to is age 7 in 1851,that put's his birth in 1844, looks as though his mum died in 1843?? I'm not sure who Sarah Frost is either, couldn't their big sister Ann or even Ellen have looked after them? Ellen married Thomas in 1856 and they were both living in Thomas Street at the time. The marriage cert however does not say that William Ellis is deceased his occupation is down as "fork maker" which made me originally think that Ellen's mum and dad could have been William and Charlotte Ellis of Hadfield House, Ecclesfield, Fork Manufacturer but they had a daughter called Ann born in the same year as my Ellen. That's my confusion. My problem is that Find My Past does not have access to the 1851 census so I can't look this bit up.

Re: Ellis family from Ecclesfield

Hi Wendy.

The 1851 census was taken Sun/Mon 30/31st March. So if John was born after this date and before Edna(h) died in Sept 1843 then his age would be 7 in 1851.Ednah could also have died in childbirth, It does state that they are orphans so not necessarily living with a relative.Edna is not a common name at this time.

I have a couple of marriage certificates were the father is not listed as deceased but he is, it depends if the question was asked.

There is a marrige at the Sheffield parish church of St Peters (cathedral) for William ELLIS and Ednah SCARGILL between Nov 1824/Nov 1825 page 300 entry number 899.

Re: Ellis family from Ecclesfield

Hi Wendy

I too have a marriage certificate for an ancestor which shows his fathers name and occupation, even though he had been dead for 13 years. I think it was neccessary to include this information whether they were alive or not.

The census returns quite often show the wrong age I have found, people seemed a bit vague back then about their birthdays! I think it's like Angela said and Edna died in childbirth, the death certificate should clear it up for you or even the burial records which should show next of kin.

Re: Ellis family from Ecclesfield

Thanks Angela and Kim

I think you are both right and have been a great help. I couldn't find anything at all either a marriage for William and Edna or any deaths that might resemble them in Ancestry and to be truthful trawling through all the records on Find My Past is a daunting task when you're not sure what you are looking for but I now have some clues thanks to you two.
