Street address check on census

Hi
I'm still trying to find out more about my great grandmother Elizabeth Hall. I have received another birth certificate today and the address on it is 24 Hoole Street. Would anyone be able to tell me who lived at this address in both 1881 and 1891. The birth was in 1885.

Many thanks, Kim

Re: Street address check on census

Hi Kim
I cannot look up 1881 census for street but in 1891 the family living at 24 Hoole Street was Florence Bramston widow aged 38years and her two sons William and John aged 15year and 4 years respectively. Hope this might be of some use. Good luck

Re: Street address check on census

Hi Wendy

Thanks, I'll have to renew my find my past membership to do the address search for 1881. It just might be that Florence was a sister who helped Elizabeth out if I'm lucky.

Many thanks, Kim

Re: Street address check on census

Hi again Wendy

I've searched and searched on ancestry, but there is no trace in 1891 of this family listed for Sheffield, where did you find them? Could the name be something different and mis-transcribed?

Thanks, Kim

Re: Street address check on census

Hi Kim

Findmypast have transcribed the family as Florence BRAMSTON the image shows that the name is actually BRAMBSTON, and Florence was born in Croydon Surrey.

In 1881 this same family are at 48 Hadfield Street Nether Hallam

Re: Street address check on census

Hi Kim,
I got the 1891 names off the Find My Past site but they don't do addresses for 1881. I did a search on Ancestry for 24 Hoole Street, Sheffield and just put Hall in as surname in the 1881 census but nothing in the name of Hall came up for Hoole Street, plenty in Ecclesall Bierlow but nothing for that address.

Re: Street address check on census

Evening Angela and Wendy

Thanks for your replies and the information, I'll see if I can find a link, it was probably just a place that was used to house widows or single mums but you never know.

Thanks, Kim

Re: Street address check on census

Hello Kim.

The closest I could get ib 1881 was numbers 23 & 25 (Piece 4626 folio 8) but for some reason the lowest even number I could get to was number 60 (piece 4626 folio 7)

Re: Street address check on census

Hello Tony

You're blinding me with numbers, and I'm not sure what they mean .

I'll see what I can find tomorrow, she moved around a lot having a number of babies but left no trace of information about herself. Think I'll have to try the rate books,

Thanks anyway, Kim

Re: Street address check on census

Hi Kim
I have had another look for your Elizabeth Hall. Was it Elizabeth who was born 1885? On Find My Past in the census for 1891 for the whole country there are 52 Elizabeth Halls, 7 Lizzies and 3 Elizth's, all aged 6 years born 1885. 2 of them are W.Riding, 2 E.Riding and 2 N.Riding. Think if you could find another name to link them in with it may help. I'll help you keep looking if you email me but I'm away for 2 weeks from Sunday!

Re: Street address check on census

Hi Wendy

The Elizabeth I am looking for was born c1860. I have just found what I think is her death record in Blaby, Leicester(that's where my family moved to after about 1886). It looks like she died when the last child Edgar Dawtry Hall was born. The death record, which I'm going to order soon, says she was born around 1860. On one certificate I have it says she was a Housekeeper (domestic Service). She could not read and write as she signs with an X.

Great grandad never married her, it's almost like she never existed which is a shame, he was already married when he met her and the poor woman seems to have been housed in at least 2 different addresses that I know of between 1881 and 1886 where she gave birth to the children, one died. Great grandad took her with him to Leicester and they lived at the same address when Edgar was born.

Edgar is also a mystery as he just disappears. I could not find a death recorded for him, so i am wondering if he was fostered out or adopted, it was probably hard for a man to raise a baby alone in those days.My Aunt seems to know about him but she is quite old and a bit vague, there's some story about my grandad being involved in a fight with someone when he thought he had found his brother.

Our ancestors hold a lot of secrets.

Thanks for your interest, Kim
