fowler or turner ??

I am still at a loss as to where my maternal grandmothers records are. I have managed to locate many of my distant relatives but for some reason she remains illusive can anyone help??
Info I have so far:
Married in the name Mabel Maud Turner 1914 Middlesbrough To William Arthur Pratt

I dont believe she was born Turner my mother remembers her being called Fowler, hence the confusion. I can find a Mabel Fowler born around the correct time (1893) in the location my mother believes she grew up in (wincobank) . My mother remembers her talking of an older brother who was killed in service(charles aged 13 on 1901 census ?)
She also had a sister called Florrie , this I think may be a step sister as I find no older sister at this residence. However there is a family rumour that the elder sister was "naughty" and was sent away to relatives to be brought up. I need some evidence that Mabel was adopted / her mother remarried a Turner. I am just going around in circles can anyone help please.
thanks Pam

Re: fowler or turner ??

Hi Pam,

Charles Fowler married Mary Elizabeth TURNER in Rotherham 1873 2nd q.

She died in 1896 and thats when stepmum moved in as per the 1901 census.

Why her birth was not registered is a mystery.

Re: fowler or turner ??

thanks for your interest , but that would not account for "my " mabel being born a fowler and married as a turner. She would retain her fathers name Fowler unless adopted. Hence I am looking for a reason for her mother to have remarried. Or am I missing something??? I am beginning to feel I have lost the plot now.!!

Re: fowler or turner ??

her mother never remarried...she died in 1896.

Maud chose to adopt her mothers maiden name.

Perhaps she was being naughty...or her mum was???

Hence no birth record!!!

If you have a copy of the marriage cert...

Re: fowler or turner ??

its all very interesting. I have found another Charles Fowler almost same age , which is the one you refer to I think, born in Rotherham 1852 married to Mary Elizabeth (? nee Turner) to whom I think you refer. They also have a son ,Charles aged 3 in 1891 . Mabel appears in 1901 census aged 8 with a brother Charles aged 13. I believe this is my Mabel. Both Charles Fowlers (1850 and 1852 ) are married in census of 1891 to Annie and Mary Elizabeth respectively.
I have a copy of Mabel Mauds Turners marriage cert which I failed to mention ( sorry) It names her father as Edward Turner (deceased) .My theory is that Mabel Maud's father Charles Fowler died , although I have been unable to prove this. Her mum remarried Edward Turner , again I have no proof. She left Sheffield around 1912 following her sister Florrie to Middlesbrough where they both marry. That I have proof of.
I will get to the bottom of this one day !
cheers Pam
any help greatly appreciated

Re: fowler or turner ??

Hi Pam,

You say you've got proof that Florrie also married in Middlesbrough. Have you got Florries marriage cert? Does that give the same father?

Re: fowler or turner ??

Hi Pam,

Why not purchase a copy Flory Fowler,s Birth Cert
1st q 1879 Rotherham.

Or do you already have it?

??? why did she say her father was Edward Turner if it was Fowler.

Re: fowler or turner ??

I have found out that Florence A Turner married Alfred Nobes 1909 in Middlesbrough.( mabels sister does not have Edward Turner named as her father on her marriage cert. I have asked if he is named as Charles Fowler , which is my theory .
I dont know why mabel names her father as Edward Turner but I will endeavour to find out. There appears to be no birth records of either mabel fowler or mabel turner for that year in the right area.
I still think I am missing something somewhere!
I will soldier on for now..

Re: fowler or turner ??

Hi folks
I have a new lead, Florence Amelia Turner married in 1907 in Middlesbrough as I already knew but her father is listed as WILLIAM EDWARD TURNER : Tile cutter.
This has lead me to 1891 William , Annie and Florence Amelia in Kimberworth Sheffield.
William Edward Turner married Amey Annie GILBEY Dec 1882 Dec in Rotherham .
still looking for the illusive MABEL MAUD TURNER.

Re: fowler or turner ??

hi Pam,

It would seem likely that Annie from Lincoln who is present on the 1891 census with florence and the 1901 census with Maud could be the link...

Found Florence working as a servant in 1901 Rotherham and a possible death for william Turner who is a File Cutter.

Re: fowler or turner ??

hi kevin , thanks for the reply. I have seen the census for florie working as a domestic servant for a vet in Rotherham. Are you refering to annie and mabel on the 1901 census as living with Chas Fowler, I can find no other references to them both together ?
Now that I have both correct birth parents I have a few births for mabel maud that I am looking into so hopefully the case will be solved. What year and where was the of death you found for wiiliam Turner. I have a William Turner (tile cutter ) around the right age in the workhouse in Sheffield in 1901. I have him alive in 1907 as father of Florrie at her marriage. Looks like Annie was living with Mr Fowler by 1901 , possibly not married to him as I cannot find any records so far that prove this. Thanks again , I am getting there.

Hi Pam.

I hope you don't mind me putting my twopenneth in.

"I have a William Turner (tile cutter ) around the right age in the workhouse in Sheffield in 1901. I have him alive in 1907 as father of Florrie at her marriage"

The fact that he is not showing deceased on the marriage certificate is not proof that he is still alive.

I have 2 marriage certificates with just the fathers name and occupation, but the father is dead in both instances. I also have a death certificate where the father is listed as next of kin and he has been dead 30 years.

Re: fowler or turner ??

hi Kevin , thanks for staying with me on this.
I have thomas, isabella and william in 1871 .
I have a few mabel turners i am pursueing now that I know her parents. I have her mother Annie Gilbey , which I knew was a family name but had great difficulty proving a connection till now. I have found them in Battersea London ,another connection I knew about but was unable to find. John Freeman Gilbey (28)born Northhampton (coachman) StJames Sq Westminster is as far back as I have so far 1851 census. The connection with Middlesbrough is that is where the trail begins.....
Mabel moved to Mbro with her sister and married a friend of Florries husband (alfred nobes- married 1907 from Milbank st Middlesbrough)who had moved to mbro from Norfolk . Mabels husband William Pratt,s family originated in Norfolk. I am not yet convinced William Edward Turner died in Mbro, still checking that out. Getting there !! thanks again regards Pam.

Re: fowler or turner ??

Hi Pam,

William Turner death in 1st q Rotherham 1896 looks a good bet although his age is 2 yrs of what it should be...likewise the one in M/bro.

Is Annie Fowler on the 1901 census age 4 Chas Fowlers or Williams?

Regards

Kevin
