St Michaels RC Cemetery
Does any one know if the burial receipts still exist for St Michaels Cemetery, lots of my Irish family are buried there, any information would be gratefully received. |

Hello Kim, If you follow the link on the left hand panel to burial records and just enter the surname you are researching. It has St Michaels records from 1862-2003 Tony Sheffield |

Hi Kim Archives at Sheffield may hold them. If you e-mail them they will be able to tell you whether or not they have what you are looking for. Catholic family History is hard, yesterday I found a site called the Catholic Family History Society, didn't even know there was one! They have a lot of useful links on there and various publications. Might come in handy for you. Thought my lot were Catholic, and indeed my Dad is, but now looks like they were Methodist or Wesleyan, just waiting to hear from archives. Good luck, Kim |

Hi Lois. I know the grave numbers but i don't know if there are any head stones, they were poor Irish people so more than likely none of them had head stones. If i sent the numbers to you would be able to take a look, photographs would be brilliant, i'll gladly pay you for your time. Thank you for responding. Kim |

Is it the Ratigans you want looking up? I used to go to school with a family named Ratigan and they lived in the Crookes area of Sheffield. Lois |

Hi Elaine The gentleman you mention, who looks after the books for St Michael's cemetery, I assume these include the St Vincent's burial records? And if so does he also keep the St Vincent's parish registers of births and marriages? I have often seen people ask where they can get access to these births and marriage records. Are they available to view or have they been transcribed and if so where are they please? |

Hello Ann. The baptism and marriage records for St Vincent de Paul, Solly St are deposited with Sheffield archives. reference Cath2 Baptisms 1853-1949 Confirmations 1858-1906 Banns 1853-1854, 1944-1967 Marriages 1857-1913, 1972-1996 Baptisms records include entries for Stannington and St Anne Deepcar 1872+. Hi Angela Thanks for that, are you sure about his? If so is it a recent thing? Last time I was down at the Sheffield Archives they told me they only had a burials CD which info I'd already got from this site. Do we know where the St Vincent's parish records are around the dates you mentioned? Wouldn't you know it, my search carries on around those dates missing from your list. Nobody ever seems to be able to tell me where the records are? I don't know the parameters either, such as dates when/if St Vincent's closed/moved, parish registers stopped etc. My whole family seems to have lived and breathed St Vincent's, which goes to show the grip/control the church had on their lives. Baptisms from 1950 to whenever Banns 1855 - 1943 and from 1968 to whenever Marriages 1914 - 1971 With a lot of Irish people having the same name it's costing a fortune in certificates etc to trace my family, where a peek at the parish register would sort it,

The records of the RC Diocese of Hallam were deposited in Sheffield Archives about 10 years ago. St Vincent's was created as a mission in 1853 and the church was built in 1856. The parish (if that is the right word?) still exists, but in a new building on a completely different site, in Crookes. They may have later baptism registers?! You could ask them. Contact details on their website: http://crookes.catholicweb.com/ There is a 50 year closure for all the catholic parish registers at the Archives, which would affect the marriage records listed above. People who can prove a family relationship can access later records of their own relations. Hugh |

Hi Hugh Yes, I believe so, and I have contacted someone at St Vincents but am given the runaround. No one seems to know where they are for some reason. Finding out where the records actually are in order to access them (with proof of relationship) would be a start. (For the later ones I've listed I mean.) I've only just found out about the ones listed above my list so I'll go down and look at these, with proof where necessary. I was able to see some other 'closed' records invoking the Freedom of Information Act, so I'm no stranger to the process. I'd even be prepared to transcribe the registers not closed for a searcheable database, it would save everyone a lot of time and money. Ann |

Hi Ann,(Kim) The information I have is as Hugh & Angela states re St Vincent's...... Sheffield Archives have them......or should as they state in their booklet they now hold the records for the RC Diocese of Hallam. The LDS also have filmings for St Vincent's up to 1949. This is what they state they have..... Church records for St. Vincent's Church, Solly St., Sheffield, 1853-1949 So you could view those at Grenoside...... Hope this helps. Elaine in Ottawa.

Hi Ann, If they are buried in the St Vincent section of St Michael's it will be very difficult to erect a headstone there. The area is unreachable due to it being overgrown and there aren't any other headstones due to it being a communal area. One lady I checked for last week there were 44 people in the same grave- mostly children! Maybe a plaque would be a better idea. Lois. |

When we were working in St Mary's cemetery on Saturday, just over the wall at the top of St Michael's, it was clear they had been doing some major clearance of vegetation - in fact there were people at the bottom carrying branches back and forth. I don't know if this extends to St Vincent's section, but it might! Hugh
