Burngreave Cemetry Map on Here
Hi I've just had a look at map 1 on here for Burngreave and I don't think it is right. My ancestors are buried in the unshaded bit, and I know they were non-conformist. There is too large a section for non-conformists if all the shaded areas are so, I think it needs to be the other way round. On map 2 you have a section NN which says RC by it, and this is in the consecrated section in map 1. I know my information is right as it took a while to find out exactly where they were in the cemetry. Maybe someone could have a look. Regards, Kim |

Hello Kim, I have checked the map against the one published in" The Burgreave Cemetery Grave Digger" by Albert Jackson and it appears that we HAVE got it the wrong way around. The Shaded area IS Consecrated the lighter sections are General and the only designated Roman Catholic section is NN. I am sure when Terri reads this she will change it....My apologies I believe I once read it is possible for any other faiths to be buried in the General Section as the minister could/would bless the plot at the time of burial but I sure that someone will put me straight if that is not the case. Hi Tony Thought it didn't look right! I was trying to find my plot map which the friends sent me, but would appear my teenage daughter has deleted in favour of something more to her likeing. Kids huh? Thought it best to mention it incase someone else had a plot number they might try to match to the map. I don't think my ancestors were always Catholic, since yesterday I've checked on other members of the family linked by marriage, and have also found them in unconsecrated plots at both Burngreave and the General Cemetery (none of these ar stated as Roman Catholic) At least I have something to work on now. All the best, Kim |

Hi Kim, Thanks for bringing the error to our attention, later today after work Terri says she will alter the wording underneath Burngreave Cemetery Map. Just a point, If your family were Catholics I would doubt if they would have been buried in the General Cemetery. BUT if anyone knows differently please chip in....... The General cemetery was originally set up for non-conformists and later added a section for Anglicans as the map indicates. If you contact the chap mentioned on the map, just can't think of his name and find there is indeed an RC section could you let us know please. Thanks very much Elaine in Ottawa.

Hi Elaine Thanks for that,Ann told me the same thing. She said if the burial purchase record said they were dissenters, they were highly unlikely to have been Catholic. Apparantly Dissenters were Protestants who broke away from the Church of England and formed there own groups being Methodists, Wesleyans, Baptists and Quakers mainly (definition from the internet). Catholics were a seperate group. I found a large Wesleyan Chapel in Green Lane from picture Sheffield, this is where gGrandad and some sibblings were born, it was called the Ebeneezer chapel I think, archives are having a look for me at the moment. there seemed to have been quite a few Chapels like this all round where they lived.
