Re: St Vincents Area - Irish Maggie

Hi Betty,

The area around St Vincents had many Irish families there from the very early 1800's Sheffield was also growing in leaps and bounds upto about 500,000... So not and easy task without more information.

Re: St Vincents Area - Irish Maggie

Hi David,
Is your Margaret Cunningham related to the Cunninghams that Kim is trying to find gravestones for in the thread on St Michael's Cemetery?

Re: St Vincents Area - Irish Maggie

Thanks Lois

I was just looking at Davids reply to Betty, i think one way or another lots of the Cunninghams and Ratigans were related it's just finding a way to prove it and i don't really know how.

Thank you Lois for your help.

Re: St Vincents Area - Irish Maggie

I am sure there will be a connection somewhere - on the 1881 Census my Cunninghams are living at 6Ct 1 Ho Hawley Croft and another family of Cunninghams are living 3 doors away at 6Ct 4 Ho Hawley Croft. As you are aware there was a large Irish community living in that area and some of the Cunningham daughters married Mannions and Diskins.
You may not be aware but the Irish connection still continues in that area - there is a Pub on Broad Lane just above Hawley St that used to be called "The Barrell" but the name was changed to "Fagans" in reconition of the Irish Landlord who kept it for many years. Also the "Dog and Partridge" pub on Trippet Lane, again a stones through from the Solly St area is affectionatley called "The Irish Embassy"

Re: St Vincents Area - Irish Maggie

Hi Betty,

Welcome........

A good place to start are with the Alan Godfrey Maps
which are available from many book stores in Sheffield.
Sheffield Scene on Surrey St has them. the cost is about two pounds. You can also order on line directly from them. The URL is under our LINKS (research material).

I can't say how important I think they are and how detailed. Even down to the "privy's".

Kindest regards.

Re: St Vincents Area - Irish Maggie

Hi Michael

I have a Mary Moran connected to my family who lived in that area too. Moran was her maiden name, she married into the a Haley family. She is living in White Croft aged 66 on 1901 census with her niece Katie. I think I have a little about Mary's history even though she is only connected to my family by marriage. Post if you want more info.
