I see his parents are still alive in 1891 census and living on New George St, Ecclesall Bierlow, Eccles Parish St Mary's. Only two younger children are at home. Henry could have moved to the States etc.... He's not showing on either the 1891 or 1901 census under Bussey. Henry was 12 years old in 1881. James his father was 46. Elaine in Ottawa.

Hi Doreen Riley and O'Driscoll are Irish names so if he did marry one of them he could well have emmigrated as many of them did. You could look these 2 women up on the census to see where they were, and where they were born before the date of marriage. Kim |

Riley and O driscoll are man and woman so he could have only married the woman but I could not presume who he married but to take a hunch I would say Riley married O' driscoll jean |

Hi Jean You're probably right, Henry could have married the other lady then? If it turns out to be Catherine, she was born in Essex and her Dad in Ireland. Regards, Kim |

Hi Doreen and Jean It's a bit like being a detective sometimes with family history isn't it? There are a lot of Emigration records that come up for the name Henry Bussey on ancestry, and also for Elizabeth Bussey. I wonder if one of these could be them? I believe they were mostly to New York.. There weren't many Wilkes around Sheffield who were born there, and I could not find Elizabeth. Kim |

Hi Jean That could be her, but she would have been very young, about 14 when they married. It may be she was a servant and came into Sheffield from elsewhere. I think Doreens best bet would be to order first the most likely marriage certificate, and have a check done before it's issued, it costs about £3. It would give the Fathers name and make it easier to trace her and where they went, hopefully. Kim |

Hi Kim, it is rather confusing especially when you do not know if when they registered their children if they even knew their dates of birth because lets face it most people were illiterate, so a girl fronting up to be married could think she was 17 but really she was only 14, no stringent checks were made in those days regards Jean |

Hi Jean Also it was legal for them to marry at 12 as long as a parent gave permission. He did marry an Elizabeth Wilkes as I've found the 1891 census which clearly shows William Riley with Catherine, you were spot on there. My theory, and it is only a theory, is that they did indeed emmigrate and he did marry Elizabeth. OOh it's like Cludo when you make your accusations.(Reverend Green did it with a hammer in the library!) Kim |
