Catholic baptisms c1788
Hi Can anyone tell me which church would have been used by Catholics at this time. The area I'm interested in is Kimberworth, Rotherham. Would they have travelled as far as Sheffield for baptisms, or was their a nearer place of worship? Thanks in advance, Kim |

Hi Kim, Have you tried Googling for the information? This could possibly be the scenario for the late 1700's. Some landed gentry in the Rotherham area could have had a private chapel that was used...... Don't forget numbers were very very small and they had been hounded for years so tended to keep their heads down. I believe Hugh sent me a web site URL a few years ago for something called the Catholic Encyclopedia which gave a lot of the history. It could be under our LINKS. Elaine in Ottawa.

Hi Elaine Thanks for your reply, I did try googling, but the array of information that came up was confusing, and I could not find anything specific to South Yorkshire. I'll try the links you mention though, it could be like you say, and a private house was used, I guess I might never find the baptisms I'm looking for. The family later moved to the Hillsborough area and whilst doing some transcribing I noticed a child there from Hillsborough Catholic School. I'm guessing their must have been some kind of Catholic Chapel in that area? Roll on next month when I can get to archives! Thanks again, Kim |

Hi Kim, Not being a Catholic I maybe incorrect on some of the information I have but what I do know your going to be very very lucky finding a baptisms written in a book for this person. They were just not that organized at that date. Catholic priests traveled the countryside doing private baptisms in many cases. What I would suggest is that you purchase from SDFHS their booklet called "The small Guide to Nonconformists and Roman Catholic Churches in Sheffield. Cost me four pounds seventy five a few years ago. You can purchase it directly from them or through "Genfair" which takes credit cards so good for those of us that don't live in England. they also have "The Small Guide to the Parishes in the Sheffield Area" which covers the Church of England Parishes. From those two booklets and the knowledge that St Marie's (Norfolk Row) or the stewards house that was there before were probably all there was. I believe the home of the Revell family at Stannington was also used as an RC church. Apart from that I don't know of any others until the early 1800's when St Vincent of Solly St was built in 1853. We have the story of that Church under Cherished Memories. Hope that helps.... Elaine in Ottawa.

Thanks Elaine In a way I'm hoping that they weren't Catholics as some of the other non-conformist religions seem to go back further and the records are easier to find. The one glimmer in the darkness is that Samuel Dawtrey, one of Thomas's sons, was baptised in St Philips in 1828. I'm going to have a closer look at this record at archives . The other children were all born earlier, so I'm hoping they may be in the Cathedral black hole. To me this implies that perhaps Thomas at least was not Catholic. Thanks again, Kim |

Hi. My name is Melissa and Im looking for a private minister or pastor to come in the soon to be god parents home and baptize my daughter privately. I have had this done before to my oldest daughter in my mothers backyad. I cannot seem to find the same pastor who came to my mothers house. I was wondering if you know how to, get in touch with Reverend Callahan, or if there are any other services offered like that? Thanks!! |

I am surprised that the Catholic Church went along with this as I would have thought they would have wanted you to go to your Parish Church for this event...... The only time I have heard about private baptisms are if the child is sick or Ministers that have NO parish and will perform usually marriages at any venue...... At least thats what I think happens here in Canada. Have you checked the locals papers? Elaine in Ottawa.

Hi Elaine It will be great if you can get hold of the records, there certainly seems to be a need for it. I think it was my great granny Elizabeth Hall who was the Catholic in the family. My Aunt has just sent me a letter with a lot of new info. in it. Looks like she was committed to an assylum for religious mania after great grandad died, now there's one for the tree, LOL. Anyway that's what my uncle remembers, unless he's joking. Oh well, you have to laugh, Kim |
