Re: re TAPTON GRANGE

The 1911 directory, searchable through the 'Directories' link to the left, has...

Wilkinson, John B. (manufacturer (Harrison Bros. & Howson). Residing at Tapton Grange, Tapton Park Road, in 1911.

In a 1919/20 Directory (not on this site) Major Edgar Wilkinson, manufacturer is listed at this address (but it does not indicate the firm). Consecutive in the street listing is George Howson and then Thos Alfred Prouting, "gardener to G. Howson Esq."

Harrison Brothers & Howson had their works in Carver Street and the (very large) building is still there.

Re: re TAPTON GRANGE

Edgar William Wilkinson's mother was Jessie Ritchie Howson, which explains the link.

Re: re TAPTON GRANGE

hi Hugh

Thank you for your prompt reply, as I live in leeds and I am not that familiar with sheffield, do you know if Tapton Grange is still there? if so do you know if it is a private residence? what I am looking for is some photos of it to confirm it with the photo that my mother has. Also I would love to see if the service records are still available from approx 1920 -1940. long shot I know, but you never know. I am not to good at searching this side of things.. if you can help any further that would be great
Thanks

Re: re TAPTON GRANGE

I have compared the 1905 OS map with the GoogleEarth image and I cannot see any trace of Tapton Grange today. It was right next to St John's Church in Ranmoor. In contrast Moordale, which was next to it and is the most likely home for the Howsons in the directory does still seem to be there.

I couldn't find any photographs of Tapton Grange at http://www.picturesheffield.com . The online site only has part of the collection so it will be worth checking the index in the Local Studies Library.

A passing reference in a message at http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk suggests this house may have been a children's home at some point.

Another reference on the ENG-Sheffield mailing list describes it as a 'boarding school' (a woman born c 1927 went there 'as a child').

Re: re TAPTON GRANGE

The only image in the more comprehensive image database (PictureSheffield) available in the Local Studies Library is of some outbuildings, possibly around a yard. They look impressive for outbuildings with well-made stone window and door frames.

I did find these three references in the general card catalogue in the Local Studies Library which shed some light on the 20th century history of the house:

Heading: Tapton Grange

ref: MP 4147M
an envelope containing: cuttings, programme, invitations etc re: the visit by Her Royal Highness Princess Mary Lascelles, Thursday 23 August 1926

Newspaper Cuttings Relating to Sheffield
vol 27 page 159; 942.74SF [probably on microfilm]
Article on the Teachers' Orphans Girls Home [Tapton Grange]

MP 837M
National Union of Teachers: The Benevolent and Orphan Fund Homes [Tapton Grange]

In White's 1919/20 Directory the "Teachers' Orphanage and Orphan Fund" Girls' Orphanage was housed in Page Hall, Firth Park Road

Re: re TAPTON GRANGE

Hi Joanne - I used to live at Tapton Grange (1942-1955) when it was a Childrens Home. I have some photos (internal and external) of the building taken before my time there (circa 1930's) should you be interested? Think the house was originally built by a local industrialist for his daughter. It was pulled down and the site is now residential halls for Sheffield Hallam University. Hope that helps. Lucy

Re: re TAPTON GRANGE

Hi Lucy,
Oh thats really interesting, yes I would love to have some photos, my nanna and step nanna both worked there my nanna died in about 1935, but her best friend became by step nanna and I think she may have been working there when you were there, she was called Lilly Harrison, I think she was quite high up in the ranks(so to speak) but any info you have would be very gratefully received, as my mother is now 77 and cant remember much about her real mother as she died when my mum was only 4, but we recently found a photo album with both Lilly's(they had the same name) and they were out side Tapton Grange, and i think that was take in the early 1930's.

Can you sen you pictures to Lewisjo@hotmail.com

Many Thanks

Joanne
