Hollis Croft
Good Evening All I am looking for births, marriages etc for another line of mine - McMahon. They came from Ireland around 1874 and lived in Solly Street. I have them on the 1881, 91 & 1901 Census at Solly St. However I don't understand the Ecclesiastical District which is given as Hollis Croft. Any ideas where the archives will be? Thanks Debs

Hi Debs, As a new researcher all you have to do is look over to the left of your screen. Have a look at Getting Started. And the Site Map for Sheffield and you will find the Archives and you will be away to the races...... Only you can decide if they were Catholic or not..... Have fun. Elaine in Ottawa.

Hi Debs They could well have been Catholic in which case they would have used St Vincents or St Michaels, probably the former as it was closer and built especially for the Irish Catholic Immigrants in the area you are talking about. There are no records on line for St Vincents, only archives at Sheffield would be able to help. There are burial records for St Michaels on here. Might be an idea to rule out the C of E Parishes first though, as many of their records are easier to access, but I would say if they were Irish and living in Solly Street then they were more likely to have been Catholic. Good Luck, Kim |

Hi Debs If it's any help my Irish relatives all lived in Hollis Croft, White Croft and Solly St. St Phillip's is given as the Ward on the census sheets but "St Luke Hollis Croft" is the full ecclesiastical parish name. I have a map of all the Eccl. Parishes in Sheffield (C of E usually). On some census sheets for the crofts area it does say St Luke for the Ecclesiastical Parish, but some officials abbreviated it to "Hollis Croft", assuming everyone would know they meant "St Luke Hollis Croft" which wouldn't fit into the space on the form. It would have been a lot simpler to put "St Luke" on all sheets so this confusion would have been avoided. The ecclesiastical parish won't be of any use to you for research anyway if they were Irish catholics, (very likely with that surname)as St Vincent's had a pretty good grip at that time, unless you married out of the Catholic religion, then you were out on your proverbial. Check St Vincent's burials on this site, usually buried in St Michael's cemetery Rivelin, or City Road cemetery occasionally, if the grave happened to be there before the family moved into St Vincent's catchment area, and they would continue to be buried there even though St Vincent's presided over the ceremony. Marriages and baptisms are harder to come by. The whole world, especially the population of Canada, is waiting for them to be put on a searcheable database online. (A lot of Sheffield Irish emigrated to Canada at the turn of the century.) Perhaps Elaine can tell us when that's likely to happen? or at least what is holding this up? Hope this helps |

Hi Guys, I do have the Ecclesiastical Parish Map handy but its for C of E. I thought we had it on the site but couldn't spot it. So if anyone wants a copy let me know and I will send you a copy. I must ask Terri when she has time to put it on the site for us..... It's one by Eric Youle by the way so I am sure he must have it of his site as well.He gave us permission and actually improved on it for us..... Funny you should mention RC Parish Registers..... I am working on it at the moment but we have to jump through 50 hoops getting permission and then having the LDS copy and send it to me so I can share it with all the transcribers it can take forever. So in other words don't hold your breath. BUT who would have though we could have got this far five years ago.....So a few Hail Mary's from the RC section would help. LOL. Regards. Elaine in Ottawa

Hi Debs, on a slightly different tack there was a McMahon kept a shop in Upperthorpe opposite the bottom of Blake St in the 1940's which may or may not be connected. Regards Barry |
