Johnson Family

Hi Everyone,
Looking for any info on my Greatgrand Parents Joseph Johnson b 1847 at Elsecar,Yorks & Harriet Johnson b 1847 at Dudley,Worcs,in the 1891 Census they are living with their 8 Children at 32 Queen Street,Swinton,Mexborough,However in the 1901 Census they are at 1 Gower Street,Sheffield,Without Joseph (Deceased) as Follows:
Harriet Johnson (Head) Shopkeeper/Draper
Alice Johnson (Daug)Assistant Shopkeeper b 1875
Emma Johnson (Daug)Assistant Shopkeeper b 1877
Ida Johnson (Daug)Assistant Shopkeeper b 1881
Mabel Johnson (Daug)Assistant Shopkeeper b 1884
Maggie Johnson (Daug) b 1888 (My Grandmother)
Jinnie Johnson (Daug) b 1890.
My Grandmother,Maggie moved to Hull about 1907-1911 and from there seems not to have add much contact with her Family as it has been said they all thought she had "Married Beneath Her!",So anything on the Death & Buriel of Joseph or any info from Directories of the above Family Shop would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Elaine

Re: Johnson Family

Hi Chris,

I can not find them on the 1901 census so can only point out a few things that I notice from the 1881/91 census.

Looking at the place where the eight children were born they lived for many years in the Wombwell/Swinton area South East of Barnsley. I believe that the children would have been registered in Rotherham.

Joseph was 36 & 46 on the 1881 & 1891 census making him born in 1845/44. So if he died prior to 1901 as you say he would have been under 56 yrs of age.

There are two possible deaths one in Sheffield in 1897 aged 56 (but we all know how wrong these ages can be) and another in Rotherham 1898 aged 57.

So I think more digging is required before you look for a possible burial site. Still more work on his actual birthdate. Have fun digging. Harriet was Jane Harriet on the 1881 census by the way.

Hope this helps.

Elaine in Ottawa.

Re: Re: Johnson Family

Hi Chris,

I appreciate that this is very old post but I noticed the Johnson and Swinton connection. I've been photographing graves in Saint Margaret's churchyard in Swinton and have come across many Johnsons. If there are any in particular you're looking for, let me know or alternatively have a look on my website (www.mollekin.net) under the Saint Margaret's section.

Re: Johnson Family

In White's 1901 Directory, 1 Gower Street has: Johnson Mrs Harriet. [no mention of shop]

In White's 1911 & 1919/20 Directories, 1 & 3 Gower Street is the Brightside and Carbrook Cooperative Society Limited

Re: Johnson Family

Hi Chris / Elaine

The family are at Piece: 4378; Folio: 64 in 1901
(Widow Harriett and her 6 daughters)

And at Piece: 3856; Folio 6; in 1891
(Miner Joseph, Harriet 7 Daughters and Son William)

Emily Jane aged 2 in 1891 is not on the 1901 (there is a death of a 3 year old registered March Qtr 1891 but it's in Worksop) I wonder if the Jennie in 1901 is actually Jannie?

Effie looks to have married Grocers Assistant George Johnson (Marriages Sep 1900 9c 419 Wortley ) living at 88 Dolecliffe Rd Mexborough(Piece: 4408; Folio: 90) in 1901.

I haven't spotted William yet but with 7 sisters he is probably still waiting to get in the bathroom somewhere...

Hi Craig,

Just noticed your message, for some strange reason its tucked into the middle of all the old messages, never mind I still spotted it.

Could we link to your website for St Margarets, Swinton please.

Elaine in Ottawa.

Re: Johnson Family

Hi all x
I'm new to this site , but it's just brill, I have Johnson's from Swinton,
My G Grandad Joseph Bailey engine driver from Swinton married Charlotte Johnson from Rawmarsh in 1883, their childern are as follow's- Harry, Ellen, look's like Arnold,Lawrence,Alfred, Frank, they moved to 56 Hunsley St Brightside Bierlow. As far as I can tell, Charlottes father was John Johnson and her mother was Harriet Johnson both from Rawmarsh, but that's where I get stuck and confess I'm pretty rubbish at this
