Found this dead horse so I figured I needed to keep beating it....... I want to make sure I understand this correctly.......... There is a "bladdered" fuel tank out there that the MOLS club is NOW accepting safety wise that can be purchased for $175 that essentially replaces the previously REQUIRED "tank and bladder" system that cost anywhere from $500 to $800 plus mounting at the time? And these are equal quality safety and purpose wise? I realize the capacities are somewhat different but that shouldn't make that much difference. Hmmmm.......interesting. |

Yep........Safety for yourself and your fellow competitors is simply about WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD. That should definitely be the main criteria for EVERYONE concerned's sake. Looks like I was right......You can put a price on safety evidently. Wonder what that little girl's father that just got severely burned while racing the other day a I-44 thinks about "what YOU can afford when talking safety?" It was a shame for her but how terrible would he have felt if someone else would have got caught up in her wreck and burned also? Seems everyone figured out a way to "afford" the safest system a few years back when we had to....... |

Would'nt the guy that conducts the inspection have his rear on the line? Say if you have a problem and someone else gets hurt too. I do not have to worry cause this old car I got has nothing new on it. Wrong I had to buy a wing slider. All the rest is used. |

OW44, mabye I didn't put it right. What I meant was DO NOT skimp on safety. Put off buying those new tires, put off buying those new wheels with a different offset, put off that new paint job. DO BUY THE ABSOLUTE SAFEST SAFETY EQUIP POSSIBLE. Hope this clears up any misunderstanding. |

I thought that I should respond to all of the chatter about the tank situation. It appears from reading the posts that we are not safe and that is not true. I will inspect the cars and pay particular close attention to the types of tank and the mounting of the tanks. If they are not to my likiing they will change them. When we originally went to a tank and bladder rule the 16 gal tank and bladder was bought for $ 550 to 600. The price went crazy when one mfger sold out to the other and then they were bought by a company in Europe. Over nite the price went to $ 1200 for a tank and bladder. Here is some of the info on the tank/bladder: Fuel Safe alcohol or gas bladder 16 gal $ 1090 retail the tank is another $ 150 to 200. 2 yr warranty on the bladder they recommend that you replace them every 5 years Fuel Safe makes a 5 gal rotomolded cross link polyethylene retangular tank (no seams) for gas or alcohol for $ 314. SFI approved You will need a metal tank to go around this unit and they will cost $ 75 to $ 150 depending on who builds it for you. This tank is the same one that Henchcraft puts on all of their cars (they don't use a metal container around the molded unit. Saldana 16 gal gas bladder $ 794 retail these are not avaialable yet. The alcohol bladder is more. 2 yr warranty they recommend that you replace them every 4 years. The tank is another $ 150 to 200. ATL 3 gal rubber molded (no seams) for gas or alcohol Pro Stock cell $ 279 retail exceeds the SFI ratings A metal container to go around it will cost $ 75 to $ 150. ATL also makes spint/midget bladders. JAZ 3 gal Pro Stock Cell SFI approved $ 292 retail cross link polyethylene no seams A metal container to go around it will cost the same as the others. These 1000 cc engines running on gas require a lot less fuel than a 16 gal tank. The R1 Yamaha on gas uses about 1 gal for the 20 lap feature. These small rubber or poly tanks will be wrapped in a metal container and mounted securely between the down tubes, they should not hang past the rear torsion tubes toward the rear bumper. The down tubes will serve as a crash barrier in case of a wreck. I would think that 2 gal of gas would be all that you would need to run a feature. If you have a 16 gal gas bladder you will need a minimum of 4 gal and probably would need 5 gal so your pickup will not starve your engine. This gas will be carried between the bumper and the torsion tubes. I feel that running less gas in the rectangular tank (instead of more gas in a 16 gal bladder)and having the tanks mounted between the rear down tubes is a safe alternative. I inspected Duane Marusarz car and I had him move his 3 gal tank from behind the rear torsion tubes up to between the rear down tubes. I have talked to the companies listed above about all of the above procedures and they feel this is a safe method of running the rectangular gas/fuel cells. I also talked with Aeromotive (one of the largest after market electric fuel pump mfgers) about the safety of putting the pumps in the tank. I was told they sell thousands of in tank pumps and have never had a fire because of an inpump tank. They feel it is a safer place than hung off the side of a frame. It is a terrible shame that the girl in OK was burned. I talked the next day to the people involved at the track. They had a 14/16 gal tank NO bladder. They had it filled with alcohol so she could make weight for the B feature. They had it mounted with bolts thru the tank to the chassis. I was told they did not have large washers on the bolts and they pulled thru the tank leaving holes for the fuel to run out. The car landed on the drivers side, very difficult to extricate from the passenger side of the car. Her safety belt kept hooking her pocket which also kept them from pulling her free from the car. She had a 1 layer suit on and no nomex underwear. She was wearing a head sock. Let's pray that she recovers from this. We will be checking every trailer for a fire extinguisher that is filled and in working order. If you don't have one, get one. Also the MOLS person in the infield of our races will have a fire extinguisher with them just in case. We will also put together a list of which of our cars are running gas or alcohol. We have not had a fire problem and we don't want one. |
