Treadmills & Cardio
Hey Guys,
OK, I need some advise regarding treadmills.
I'm currently in the process of building a home gym and am looking to buy a treadmill for cardio work.
I've heard low intensity power-walking or HIIT is a good choice for someone looking to strip bodyfat whilst maintaining a decent amount of muscle mass and strength.
To be honest my knowledge on cardiovascular exercise is pretty limited so I'm not 100% sure which type is gonna be the best for me.
My goal is basiclly to "cut" whilst maintaining lean muscle mass I've gained through my bulking phase.
To be honest I think I've been too worried about gaining bodyfat whilst bulking that it has slowed my progress down more than what I could have gained.
Anyway, I've always liked the versatility of treamills and am now considering which one to buy.
I'm thinking of going for Horizon Fitness Quantum III Treadmill, although I'm toying with the idea of stretching the budget a little further and going for the Ti31 Treadmill. This is £100 more than the Quantun III but has a few nice additional features.
However I'm not really sure I need to go that far considering the fact that I'm not intending on doing much high intensity running/jogging..etc. as my goal is more for fat loss/bodybuilding/strength..etc. as oppossed to cardiovascular conditioning (although no doubt this is very important and beneficial).
The Sonic Treadmill might actually be enough for my needs, but I'm really not sure.
I am basiclly looking to buy 2 additional pieces of equipment for my gym...one being some a treadmill, the other being a decent leg press machine.

Re: Treadmills & Cardio
Hi FunkyFresh.
Matts's off this week so we're a little busy in the shop. I will try and get back to you tomorrow.
Please bear with me for a day or 2 until I have enough time to get back to you without having to rush an answer through.
Watch this space.
Cheers

Re: Treadmills & Cardio
Hi Funkyfresh,
The best cardio exercise for you is whichever one you enjoy the most. Sure different versions of cardio have different associated benefits and/ or drawbacks, but if you're not interested in performing them they'll be difficult to keep up.
There's many training theories as to what method is better than another for losing weight with all being easily proved as a calorie deficit through increased exercise (burning more calories) preferably alongside a reduced calorie diet will result in weight loss. Once again, the best method's the one you can stick to.
Provided you lose weight slowly and keep your protein intake fairly high you should be able to successfully lose more fat than muscle. If you have concerns then taking bodyfat percentage measurements with a quick accurate aid such as callipers will provide a more accurate guide than just weight loss alone.
TREADMILLS:
The Sonic's running bed is far to small to run on and as such we suggest this for walking only.
The Quantum 3 offers great value for money with a decent size running surface and an equally capable motor - this model's ideal. Pay a little bit more for the Ti31 and you afford yourself a slightly better cushioned running bed. Although the change could be equally well spent on a really decent pair of running trainers , if you don't already have some.
LEG PRESS:
45deg Leg Presses are by far more comfortable than cheaper vertical leg presses so I'd personally rule them out straight away. We offer two leg presses both classed as commercial although having used them both they're a world apart.
Body Solid's LPH1100 is a well designed and well constructed bolt together frame offering both leg press and hack squat. The feel is better than most I've used in gyms but I feel it's still slightly restricted & you really need to tinker the adjustments to beable to perform your chosen exercise with full range of movement.
The GymRatZ Leg Press is a completely different entity and although it costs twice as much the feel is unrivalled, which is what you'd expect from a machine we build ourselves. In truth if I'd never used our own leg press I'd be more than happy with Body Solid's offering. But as that's not the case I'd choose the GymRatZ Leg Press everytime .

Re: Treadmills & Cardio
Thanks Matt.
Is the Gymratz leg press adjustable like the Body-solid one?
I expect the Body-solid machine is probably good enough for me....although I am tempted by the Gymratz one, but I don't think I can quite stretch the budget to that.
Besides which, I normally do free-weight Squats (either front or back) as my primary leg exercise, so I only really use the Leg Press to finish them off.
I also like the idea that this machine doubles as a hack squat machine and has an adjustable footplate for calf presses aswell.
Obviously the Gymratz machine is the better of the two, but it's almost twice the price of the Body-solid one.

Re: Treadmills & Cardio
The Body Solid machine is more versatile, but I to would struggle to justify that much money for just one exercise,or 2 exercises in Body Solid's case, unless it was for a gym.
I'm slightly spoilt with my choice, but Body Solid's offering is certainly better than most I've tried and does have the added benefit of hack squat and being half the price.
You've already got the availability of squats so there's certainly no rush to buy one. Just throw in some lunges to finish them off in the meantime
