Rimonabant - Acomplia & Zimulti

You may have heard the name Acomplia mentioned on gmtv this morning, see:

GMTV Article

So what is Acomplia??
A trademarked name (along with Zimulti) for the new diet drug from Sanofi becomming available on prescription in this country. The claims are as follows:

Supression of appetite and could help to regulate diabetes and cholesterol.

Does it work? Who knows, but I'm sure alot of the controversary & publicity surrounding its naming is all part of the HYPE.

In fact having trawled through the internet I can't even find out what the ingredients are, as the chemical name's patented and the product name's trademarked. It's a shame gmtv didn't include Dr Hilary in on the discussion - their straight talking gp with sensible advise - as I'm sure he would've dampened the hysteria.

The claims made and the fact Acomplia's a prescription drug, rather than a supplement, would lead me to believe that it's possibly an ephedrine product combined with something like chromium & possibly other things. I could be way off as in truth I know f all about the drug, but if anyone comes across an article pointing out potential adverse side effects that might give you a better idea.

Re: Rimonabant - Acomplia & Zimulti

Didn't see this before. Rimonabant is new research and I don't think it contains any ephedra. It works on blocking the hunger receptors in the brain (actually I think its a spin off from research on the activity of THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, and its effect on producing the munchies - this stuff blocks the receptors cannabinoids excite). Adverse effects are a bit like those related to excessive cannabis use - depression and anxiety. The US FDA initially refused release of Accomplia on these grounds (sounds better than just saying 'it's French'!)but given the obsession with finding drug related fixes for obesity I guess its only a matter of time before they cave. There's already a load of fake stuff out there on the net because of the ban and the prescription only availability elsewhere. The research suggests 20 pounds loss in 2 years (but I don't know how big they were before they started

Re: Rimonabant - Acomplia & Zimulti

Hello Guy,

I hope training's going well?

Thanks for the info. I hadn't thought anymore about the product since the post as no one's even mentioned it.

20 lbs in 2 years may be a weight loss but not a very good one. Especically poor if the test results were from obese or morbidly obese people as well.

Re: Rimonabant - Acomplia & Zimulti

Matt,
Training stuttering at the moment, new baby arrived (plus dodgy right shoulder -courtesy of ancient rugby injury) slowing things down a bit. Probably need + 2 years Rimonabant at least.
Talking of which, just seen August Muscular Development -there is a fairly in depth look at the drug. Looks like the FDA will sanction it in the US but there are more side effects. The loss figures are still the same though, so no great breakthrough -except the appetite suppression appears to wear off after a while but the weight loss continues. Something else going on?
Cheers

A baby's a nice distraction - Congratulations!

But the old injury's not so good. Have you had it checked out or is it just a matter of rest?

There's a few reports (some relating to obesity) now on Pub Med that I read last week. The tests provide fairly modest results, as you mentioned, and would lead you to question Rimonabants use depending on what potential adverse side effects are found.
