Worst Advice Anyone Has Given You On Fitness?
Hi, everyone.
I am new to this particular board, but I thought I would open a new thread. Has anyone ever been given some off-thw-wall, really bad, just plain wrong fitness advice?
I have a few clients that have heard some pretty bizarre things from their previous gym buddies. One of my favorites was that "it is bad for women to lift weights."

Re: Worst Advice Anyone Has Given You On Fitness?
Welcome Lynn,
Ha..ha. I bet you get women say all the time "I don't want to get really muscular!"
One of the most stupid things I've heard was on Friday. A young lad wanted a second opinion on his trainers advice. The lad trained at a council run gym. He'd been told to build different parts of his body at different times - I assumed he meant the instructor had put a newbie on a split routine. The lad said no as he was aware about split routines and the guy had specifically told him to get a big chest, then big arms...and so on . Perhaps that's why you get so many of the bad postured gorilla physiques walking out of council gyms .
What's the most embarrasing thing you ever believed at the gym?
I got told before my first bodybuilding show (a few years ago now) that I needed to buy a thong. On a Sunday morning in front of a dozen gym members I put my music on, pulled down my trousers, and revealed two great big white cheeks . I've seen people do a lot worse though - we live and learn.

That's hilarious, Matt!
I would say my most embarassing moment at the gym was before I was a trainer. I joined a HUGE gym with loads of fancy-schmancy machines. I tried to look professional and use this one machine, but I really had no clue to what I was doing. I hopped on the machine and KERPLUNK POP BOOM...I forgot to set the weight pin correctly and applied way too much force. Weights were rattling and everyone stopped to stare at me.
Nothing like your thong story though...lol

That's not that embarassing Lynn. You must have more embarassing stories that you're holding back through fear of yet more embarassment.
I think I've embarassed myself in almost every gym I've trained at...oh lets think of another. During the Sydney Olympics I trained at a gym in Sydney called Broadway. It was a very friendly atmosphere and not knowing anyone I made friends with most of the guys who trained in there. There was one guy who I became quite friendly with who was the head honcho personal trainer there (I can't remember his name). He tended to train around the same time so I'd chat to him, offer eachother spots, chat in the shower afterwards. I'd been training at the gym a couple of months when I was walking back with him one day when he began...
PT "Can I ask you something personal Matt?"
Me "Yeah"
PT "Are you gay or straight and would you like to come on a date with me?" He blurted out.
Me "I'm straight, so I wouldn't + I'm seeing someone."
He was very apologetic and very nice about things. Being a naive 20 year old (although I'm still a bit naive) it was only later when I spoke to another girl I'd started seeing that I had the sudden realisation that I'd been training in the campest gym around - as if the name wasn't a bit of a giveaway (although the street's called Broadway aswell). In truth it didn't bother me one bit as I consider my training much more important. All the guys that trained there were all really nice, in particular the PT who was much more embarassed than I was. Although you can forgive him for thinking I was gay as I think, looking back, I must've been the only straight guy in there.

That was a great story! lol. No wonder the members were all so 'nice' to you :)
I truly can't think of any really embarassing time. How about other people? Any stories??

Re: Worst Advice Anyone Has Given You On Fitness?
Worst advice given to me was that of my sub-concious in the early years -
"the more often you train the better
you'll be" Which was fine WRT the martial arts side, but lousy for trying to increase muscle mass.
Fortunately I was young and recovered quickly, but it still took a bad case of pneumonia to slap me about the face and wake me up as to the dangers and consequences of over-training!
Trouble is, I think I've gone too far the other way now!
