Re: Soldiers issued with Food vouchers

The pay as you dine was something that was brought to my attention a while back...I know there are personnel that for one reason or another have little money left at the end of the month...some may argue that it is a money managment situation but we won't go down that route.....It has always been that when joining the services you would have a roof over your head , clothes on your back and food on your plate ...I can feel a petition coming on here all, how do we feel about it?

Re: Soldiers issued with Food vouchers

good morning all,i thought i would add a little bit of our own experience about this, might not be relevant but here goes - when Craig was posted to germany, he was not given any re-settlement info i.e shops, pubs, clubs etc, opening times or anything. When he got there he found out about the pay and dine , which he was not doing at blandford, they took his money from wages there. As he had to pay a hefty excess baggage fee because the army had told him not to send all his kit over by cargo, he had no money left when he got there and went 3 days without food as noone had mentioned this to him and that if he had no money they would give him vouchers. We ended up bailing him out, which we have done on numerous occasions because of some army **** up with, and they carried on taking money for food for 3 months even tho he was on pay and dine. So my advice would be to any new soldiers,is find out in advance and dont get caught out. xx

Re: Soldiers issued with Food vouchers

Just had this come through on defence updates

Allegations of Personnel needing loans to eat
Reports in the Independent on Sunday and the Sunday Express this weekend incorrectly allege that servicemen and women are taking out loans in order to purchase food due to poor pay. Under the Pay As You Dine scheme, personnel purchase their meals using credit paid out of their wages. A very small number of people, for a variety of reasons, sometimes find themselves experiencing difficulties towards the end of the month. When this happens, they can use a voucher scheme to continue to purchase food to be paid for from their next salary packet. This ensures that no servicewoman or man ever goes hungry.

I still think this system will prove unpopular with allot of the guys and girls....my lad has a microwave in his room and a fridge and i think they have a toaster and kettle ect to makes snacks....my lad is very good with cash but i hear constantly of those who are not and the voucher system would make it that the minority were always having money deducted each month anyway so why not stick to the old system.
Karen your lads situation was not on, surely someone could have let him know beforehand that pay as you dine was in place in his new posting

Re: Soldiers issued with Food vouchers

Hi Teresa, yes i know, but it was one error after another at that time. He went out there and was told that "why had he been sent out as his unit was in canada", theyd gone out 3 weeks prior to his arrival. They left him to fester in his room and do meanial jobs before the finally decided to send him home for 3 weeks leave as they had nowt for him to do until his unit came back. It was just one thing after another. I look back on it and laugh now because you just wouldnt have believed it at the time. xx

Re: Soldiers issued with Food vouchers

glad it all worked out oay in the end for him though karen...how does he find the system now he is used to it?
From what I have heard they will end up spending far more than they were previously charged for food on the old system.

Re: Soldiers issued with Food vouchers

I didnt know that either Teresa hun , i will get Dave to try and find out if that is the case for the Navy also.
Karen that must have been such a worry for you to know that your son had not eaten for 3 days out there. that should never have happened.
