sending parcels

I am fuming, ive just sent my first parcel to a friends son and couldnt belive the woman behind the post office counter!! she was so rude it was unbelievable - saying i had to list every items that it contained and value and even hinted that anyone could send anything out!!!! I loudly pointed out that it was being sent to a soldier fighting for his country and hardly expected it to contain anything suspect!!!!!!! Has anyone else experienced problems like this or was i just unlucky because i live in a back water village!!!

Re: sending parcels

HI Karen!!! glad to see you posting!! I always post at the same post office, and never had any problems.the first time, she just asked me for a vague description of what was in it, after that she got used to me coming in, and knew what I would be sending. i have heard some horror stories though, of post office staff being really awkward and snotty, you should just remind them that they are there to provide a service.... preferably with a smile!!!!

Re: sending parcels

Hi Karen and welcome to P43. My sister had the same problem at Christmas, she filled two boxes with exactly the same items, the assistant said one was overweight the other was ok, my sister explained but to no avail. I don't know whats wrong as the parcels are scanned before going abroad anyway. Its not as if we are asking the assistant to pay the postage.

Re: sending parcels

Hiya Karen thats more than fine hun to let off a little bit of steam , we all need to do that from time to time . The people at my post office have always been very good with me so i have no complaints really, but i have always had to fill out a customs form no matter what is in the parcel.

Re: sending parcels

Hi again Karen, I always put the customs form on but only list briefly as thats all you need to do ...if you put deodorant make sure it says Roll on or it will get opened, You only need to be general about contents as sometimes we split contents so its not full value anyway ...my box contents would usually range between £10-£15

Where in the UK are you Karen?

Re: sending parcels

Hi thanks for all the replies, wasnt expecting that much of a response . I live down on the south coast - near sometimes sunny bournemouth. My eldest son is shortly going to sunnier climates

Re: sending parcels

Hi again Karen, my second son finished his afghan tour last sept, he is a Royal Anglian. Its a worry when they are on tour as a parents job has always been to protect their children...bit difficult to do when they go off to sunnier climes, thankfully contact is easier than ever these days and we are lucky enough to keep on top of what going on.
How did you find us Karen? I am sure you will gain lots of support on here

Re: sending parcels

No its fine to say his regiment, we are all proud of our loved ones on here, just never post movements/ travel ect leave dates or any link to your address.
oh via Linda, she did say she had been telling people about us on facebook.
Is this your lads first tour, it was my last first one last year and it is hard, i think my first few months I lived on my nerves, a barely sleptat all and was sitting up half the night...I achieved nothing as i was no use to any of the rest of my family the next day. I also have younger children aged 5 and 10 as well as three grown up kids so still need to be doing things with them too...and I was so tired. Keeping busy is the key to getting through the tour

Re: sending parcels

Hi all, and Hi Karen lol we must stop meeting like this!!!

Anyways on the subject of parcels need some help please as Hubby now not where he was before but nearby in another country where there is a big transit camp. Can I still send free parcels or is it only to the two main places?? If that makes sense!!

Re: sending parcels

Ok, hes in the signals, 7th armoured brigade. I was doing ok and getting my head round the idea until i came home from holiday and was told by my mother that apparently he admitted hes s*** scared as its his first tour and doesnt know quite what to expect, now im back to square one !!! must admit to a few more glasses of wine drunk in the last couple of days than id like , time is getting close! I have a younger son whos 17, so i know i have to not forget about him but admit my eldest is getting lots of my attention at the mo so i think he feels his nose is being pushed out, i dont mean to tho, just hope he understands but you know what siblings are like I think its probably wise to put in a bulk order for prozac Im sure once my eldest gets out there he will have no time to think about things and just get on with the job in hand
Teresa

Re: sending parcels

If he says its still the same BFPO Angie then things will still find their way to him okay...he may not need the same sort of things that you had been sending, sure he will tell you what he needs and how long things usually take to get there

Re: sending parcels

p.s is there a way round these codes at the end before we post messages, i keep getting them wrong - must need glasses lol

Re: sending parcels

How old is your lad Karen?...my son was also scared, if they say they aren't then they soon will be when faced with a first contact...Its okay to be scared as thats what keeps them on their toes...If its his first tour then nobody would expect him to know everything, the guys all look out for each other and support each other. Alot of the guys are very young and those in command look out for signs of not coping ect

Re: sending parcels

Tee Hee Karen about the prozac , but i am sure you will do just fine hun . We will all get you through it and keep you busy. Party nights on here on a wednesday are great for passing away a few hours . Its only natural for you to be really concerned and although i have no children myself i can empathise how it must feel for you. Try to keep smiling hun we are all here for you.
As for the codes unfortunately no , i had great difficulty at the beginning with my g's and c's and found myself laughing so much one night when i tried 10 times to send a message lol . You do get used to them though

Re: sending parcels

HI Teresa and Karen, and quite possibly Karen as if your lad is going where my hubby was, then they do stop at this place.

Thanks Teresa but unfortunately his BFPO number has changed. Will go do some research in a min.

thank you
Teresa

Re: sending parcels

no way around the codes 'sorry' that how we IP log (your computer ID number) for those who leave off their email..its a way that we can ban those who abuse the site, this keeps the rest of us safe.
Karen maybe some shop bought reading specs might help for the PC ...try to refresh if you are not sure of the code, it will then give you another to type

Re: sending parcels

Hes just turned 20, so not as young as some. I did say to him if he had said he wasnt scared i would have called him a liar so he couldnt have won. I think it shook him up a bit recently- as it did all of us- as one of his good mates who he did all his training with, had the misfortune of being involved with someone who wanted to go to a greater god so to speak, and ended up with a very nasty injury to his leg. Hes ok tho, on the mend, and nothing missing thank god.

Re: sending parcels

Thank you, you are a star, am hoping so but don't mind paying if I have to.

I know I'm probably slow on this news but only heard it today, but its good that everyone who goes on a tour gets there council tax rebate now, not just those going out to the 2 main theatres.

can't think where i heard it but those looking in who claim benefits such as tax credits must inform the inland revenue about any rebates as this will effect their claims...sure Elizabeth will know more on this as she works for one of the government depts

Re: sending parcels

No matter how old your sons are they will always be your baby. I never forget when my son went into the Army at 16 as a boy soldier, I sat in his room for days, all I could see was that little lad waving goodbye on the train. But the next time I saw him, and it was only a few months after, he was a pefect gentleman, said 'thank you', opened the door for me.
I just couldn't believe it. My son loved the Army life, always put it first, lived for his regiment and died for them, and thats what he would have wanted, our troops are the very best no one can touch them in my eyes, highly trained in the job they go out to do, we love em all.

Re: sending parcels

Thank you Karen and Teresa, its you thats an inspiration to me and Ray, I was only without Ray for 17 days, how you cope with months away from your loved ones I do not know. I know I did it with John,
but its all a blur now. Time heals Karen, you never forget but learn to get on with your life. I have met so many wonderful people who have been so kind to be.
